Berlin Wall is an important landmark in
Germany's history, and our world's history as well. When World War II ended in 1945, the Nazis surrendered and a new regime was established. The wall was the symbol of division between West Berlin and East Berlin. It was built through the government's efforts to curb off daily massive migration of professionals between East and West Berlin. The wall acted as a concrete curtain trapping its own people causing division, turmoil and hatred. It eventually became a
Communist tyranny landmark.
It was only after three decades that the wall was finally torn down through massive public demonstrations following the demise of the East German government. This was prompted by the decline of the communist powers of the Soviet Union. Even if the wall fell in 1989, it was only in October 3, 1990 that the two Germanies were formally reunified.
Today, small portions of the wall continue to stand. But their former symbolism of tyrannical power and abuse no longer remains. The wall is just a remnant of the dark history that Germany and its people went through, the part of history that could prove that communism only produces conflict and strife.
